Discussion Questions:
1. How does the level of intensity and passion in your life affect not only your own life, but also those around you?
2. What is at stake in whether we become that “light of the world” Jesus described?
3. Paul uses the image of a soldier to encourage Timothy not to become distracted (2:3-4). What are some of the distractions that tend to get you sidetracked? How do you need help avoiding these distractions?
4. Christians believe that the Scriptures set up helpful “boundaries” which tell us how to run life’s race (2:5). How can we live by the guidance offered in Luke 10:27 (Greatest Commandment), Matthew 28:18-20 (Great Commission), and Micah 6:6-8 (Great Commitment)?
5. Paul uses the image of a farmer to promote patience and perseverance (2:6). What does the farmer receive because of this enduring spirit? What does this message say to us about persevering?
6. When have you been tempted to give up? What is at stake if you were to fail to faithfully carry the torch?
Taking Action:
Memorize 2 Timothy 1:6-7 or 2 Timothy 2:1
Going Deeper:
Where are the places your group serves together as a means of being the “light of the world?” Where might you need to serve?
Sending into the mission:
God, you have done so much for us. You are the source of our fire. Yet, you have given us things to do as well. We confess that when our fires have been low, we are not the only ones who have suffered. Give us strength to run life’s race in such a way that we not only burn with passion and intensity, but pass that fire on—helping ignite that flame in other people. We commit to never giving up so that we can see your purposes accomplished in the world. In the name of Jesus we pray. Amen.
