Beyond the Walls

Broadway has made a commitment to reach beyond our walls to meet the needs of our community. Just a few blocks from Broadway is T.C. Cherry Elementary School. This is a place where children are loved, where dedicated staff go the extra mile to help students succeed and where there is a real sense of community that is often lacking in our society. Two-thirds of their students qualify for free or reduced lunch. Sometimes these children lack the simple things—adequate school supplies, help with homework, or just someone to read to them or give them attention. Broadway is committed to doing all we can to minister to these children and their families and to provide support and encouragement to the T.C. Cherry teachers and staff.

Partnering with T.C. Cherry.

Broadway staff has worked closely with Jennifer Shoemake, T. C. Cherry Family Resource Center Coordinator, to assess needs and develop a plan for a long-term partnership with T.C. Cherry. There are many ways in which Broadway can assist the Family Resource Center in the services they provide (such as furnishing school supplies, clothing and eyeglasses for students in need, helping with the Winter Coat Drive, and providing assistance to the Coordinator with her many duties). We have also developed a plan to provide ongoing support in the classroom, as well as a mentoring and tutoring program.

You Can Help Impact the Lives of Children!

Since our partnership began during the Fall 2007 semester, things have gone great. We are always looking for more people who are willing to give a little time each week to T.C. Cherry. Here are just a few of the ways you can help:

• Commit to being a tutor before, during or after school.
• Commit to mentoring a child--its as easy as eating lunch or talking.
• Give an hour on a regular basis to help a teacher in their classroom.
